It's about a couple of things. [ judging by the way he subconsciously pulls his hands back into the sleeves of his sweatshirt that's also part of it. apollo's not necessarily insecure by nature but at the same time he does tend to stick to himself. doing the opposite yesterday and being rebuffed and then the ensuing argument kind of pissed him off but also bummed him out.
which sucks, given vacations are meant for relaxing. ]
But if you don't remember then... it's fine. Sometimes you have one too many and get a little crazy. Happens to the best of us. [ don't just assume klavier was drunk and not cursed. ]
[ HELP klavier blinks and then furrows his brow. ]
I... hadn't been drunk at all. You know this. [ he knows about the curses.... or he did before. anyway, klavier catches those receding hands and makes the connection. ]
Ah. Do those things include the insults I threw at you about your hands and forehead then?
[ the blank stare says he does not know this, but he does seem to tentatively believe this. and he rolls his eyes. ]
I know they're both kind of big, but pointing it out was a low blow when we just met. [ he is trying to say this patiently, but the tone betrays that he's still not thrilled and he's a little sensitive about it. also, unaware, he is just tipping klavier off to what's wrong here. ]
Like I said yesterday, I think I would have remembered meeting someone like you before. [ this time though the agitated tone isn't there? it's somehow half-flat and half-flirty, which is. something. ]
[ eyes go wide. the flirtiness isn't lost on him, but for once, their situation is more important than flirting. klavier lowers his head, rubs at his eyes, and sets his hand on apollo's bag. ]
Still? Why is it taking so long?
[ he says this to himself. he raises his head to look at apollo again, this time seeming worried. ]
Is this because you both died? Will you ever change back?
[ hm. he can see this is unsettling for klavier for some reason. he's now trying to run through his own memories if they had met before while on vacation and if he doesn't recall spending a night with him or something (despite knowing himself), but his eyes drift to the bag curiously. it doesn't entirely register that it's his, but it's nice enough. his gaze goes back up to klavier's face though, and there's a touch of concern in his expression. ]
I didn't die. And I'm still who I've always been. [ he will remember later, when he comes back to himself, whenever that may be. but for now he's sure of this. ] Are you okay? Do you want to sit down? Take a minute.
[ he thinks maybe klavier is going through something and projecting on apollo....... ]
[ help me he's just one of many hoes in apollo's zip codes... klavier shakes his head. ]
No, you are not. But you won't believe me, will you? Right now, we are strangers.
[ he's not asking apollo directly. right now, you're just like every other faceless person in this place, he wants to say, but he's already hurt this other apollo's feelings before. he's more careful now. apollo justice and ema skye, as he knew them, could be gone for good. just the idea of that is like a wave of cold water over his body.
if apollo is giving him room on that beach lounger thing, though, klavier will come over and sit at the edge of it, setting the bag down on his towel. ]
but he seems less like he disbelieves him but more like he's not sure how to believe it. he's not picking up on lies from klavier is the thing, and now that his hands slip out of his sleeves again he can probably notice apollo's still wearing his bracelet. but there are some small dings on it, like maybe it got scratched on something solid and jagged.
he pulls his knees up and closer to the rest of his body so klavier can sit, arms looping around himself and chin resting on his knees to look at him. he does at least flip the sunglasses up into his hair so he can properly watch him. apollo justice as klavier knows him might not be here right now, but at his core he's still apollo justice. he's still curious and skeptical and eager to look for answers to things that don't add up. ]
A stranger. [ there's a small, awkward grin when klavier says "who are you" because it's what apollo thinks but he gets that for some reason klavier thinks otherwise. ] My name is Apollo Justice. But you already know that. I'm on a vacation for a little while to decide where I want to go next. I'm sort of between jobs right now, so I'm not really in a rush. Why would I be? The beach is beautiful. [ and it's nice and calm and relaxing. ]
[ apollo is always going to be on the "cute" end of the spectrum, much to his chagrin. but wow, that sure does line up with stuff they've talked about doesn't it. ]
Didn't like it, so I left. [ he sounds too breezy about this to have given it much thought. having zero memories about his actual life means he's plugging in things that sound right without thinking about it. it's what he currently believes. ] If you're going to have a job shouldn't it be something you care about? That's why I'm not thinking about it much while I'm here.
[ thank you. it is in fact giving him a bit of a headache trying to rationalize this but he's happy to move on. ]
Oh. [ he looks down at his wrist and pushes his sleeve up so klavier can see the bracelet. he doesn't take it off though. he refused in the trial and he refuses now, but he holds out his hand so he can see anyway. ] Yeah, I've heard that before. I've had it since I was a kid, I think.
[ since he was a baby, actually, but. details. foggy, disjointed details. ]
Really? I've never actually seen another one like it before. [ but he lets klavier do whatever. looking at the scratches though he frowns. ] I... don't know. I don't think those were there before.
[ and now he's looking, too? what the fuck. ]
Might've hit it on something, but usually it's pretty sturdy.
Sure, I guess that's possible. [ he sounds pretty unbothered about it because he is not thinking about it in relation to a riptide but. yeah. ] I'll have to see if I can buff them out later.
[ klavier lets him go. well, that answers that. he'll just shove the image of apollo's dead, blue body directly into the back of his conscience where it belongs. ]
I didn't mention before, but my name is Klavier Gavin. "Prosecutor Gavin," to some.
[ sorry you now have to think about his dead body twice. as it is, he is none the wiser. however, he does grin getting a name from him. ]
Nice to meet you. [ things he will kill himself a third time over when he remembers what's going on, because he should not be introducing himself to someone who knows him. on the other hand, it's kind of a nice name. but... ] A prosecutor? No wonder you need a vacation.
[ even while being a pod person, his intrigue lies in the law. his expression shifts to something curious, and he wants to ask a little more about that ("where did you go? what do you mean returned? why prosecution?") but then klavier mentions his band and
this is probably the only time he looks remotely positive about the gavinners, given the little laugh. ]
That doesn't surprise me, I think. You have the look. [ the glitz and glam... glimmerous... ] Those are two very different things though.
[ there's like... the most miniscule flicker of recognition. like one of those things where you experience deja vu, but it's so minor you convince yourself you didn't. whatever happened, it's gone again. ]
The law got in the way of rock and roll? Shocking. [ it's teasing. he's going to feel like absolute garbage later, i'm so sorry klavier. ] Do you miss it?
I'm glad you found something else you care about that much. [ and he means that sincerely, and the way he's looking at him is curious but with some amount of respect, too. ] You could've taken the easy way out with music, but... sounds difficult. Being a lawyer, I mean.
[ but, because he currently has zero memories and ergo zero hangups about literally anything: ] So if I asked you to play something for me sometime, would you?

I understand. Let's talk about something else then.
[ there's not much point in pressing. he saw how the two of them reacted to things that would make them lose their vacationing spirit.
so klavier just opens his hand and gestures towards apollo's wrist. he sees those marks glinting on his bracelet. ]
That bracelet is quite unique. May I see it for a moment?

Do you think, perhaps, it was scraped against some rocks while you were here?

[ it's actually not but. this apollo doesn't need to know that. ]
Ja, although I have only recently returned to the prosecution's lectern full-time. Before, I was also the frontman of a rock-and-roll band.

Our band was a unique one. Each member was also an employee of the federal government. That was our gimmick.
[ he says it like it's normal even if it's weird as fuck. ace attorney i love you. ]
Ironically, that is also what led to its eventual dissolution.

A little, but I would not trade this outcome for all the riches and fame in the world.
I can still play music solo whenever I would like.
